Should an Artist "Invest" in their own work?

On a recent questionnaire we asked artists if they thought they should share in the cost of putting on an art show. The answers revealed what I already knew from 40 years of experience: Most artists have no idea of what it takes to promote and sell their work.

When I use the term "artists", by the way, that does NOT include "art club" hobbyists. Some of that group actually do harm to public perception of "art" by exhibiting at all. I'm talking about genuine artists - not necessarily "working artists", but people devoted to their art. People who exercise originality and creativity and work from their own ideas or photos. People who paint or draw on a very regular basis AND show growth in their work.

What does it cost to put on an exhibit in most places: in New York - $1000 a day/ Japan - $4000 a week / London - $1500 a day. You can find some galleries that charge less, but those are the going rates that I found in 2010.

The world is changing and so is art and what it takes to successfully exhibit your work. Those not prepared to "pay to play" should keep showing at local furniture stores, but those that are serious about art should buckle-up & read this article now.(click here to read it)
