Rise

Sitting in the goat pen
looking out over the grassy hill
I saw a vision in the early morning
light.

Up and out of the blonde grass
came a large barn owl.

It must have been still,
sitting there for some time,
so when it flew up unexpectedly,
it looked like the very land itself
had risen up and taken the shape
of a mystical bird.

It flew low over me and went past
the green trees.

My eye followed it utterly amazed.
Such beauty in the beige, tan and light brown
feathers so perfectly dressed for its life.

Its powder white face and black eyes
made it look otherworldly
but no, so perfectly of this world
it stunned the eyes.
