Impossible Things

The persistence of a hummingbirds wing
like a tiny quivering balloon
carries it while hovering,
gliding through
the flower-petaled branches.

You can see the sure pulling
on the sides of its small body
the jeweled feathers rippling
as the wings' movement
struggles against gravity.

Even on something so tiny
the ever present drag of the earth
is there
never relenting.

And light impossible things
like hummingbirds, dragonflies and bumble bees wings
are always pulling away from it
until finally... in some quiet hour,
their wings give out and they surrender
fall light and small
to the waiting earth.
