W.R. Thomson was born in New Haven, Connecticut. At the age of five his family moved to California. He has been an artist/craftsman since early childhood. Much of his artistry is self-taught, although he has studied under a number of artist and craftsman namely: Bill Richardson, Phil Cornellius, Bill Bockus, Nat Fast and George Monreau who influenced him when he was developing his style and techniques.
He always begins his work by drawings, which releases his imagination and begins the creative process for each piece. He works in mixed mediums using acrylics, wood, metal, ceramics, glass, and leather for his paintings, sculptures, and woodcuts.
He likes working in many styles, method and techniques, not limiting himself to any particular style. His work ranges from realism, expressionism, cubism, pop, abstract, to whimsical.
He is now retired after twenty-five years of teaching Fine Arts and Crafts in Santa Barbara County. He resides in Shasta County California
