Artist Interview

Featuring Janet Flanagan

Janet's Exhibit "Painting with Oil & Spirit" Opened February 5 and runs til the end of February. Below is an interview of the artist.

Where do you work most of the time?

I primarily work in my studio which is in the back part of my house. It was built in 1915 and sits on 102 acres up in the Trinity Mountains. I am surrounded by nature and all my animals that include three dogs, ten cats and four horses. My studio has french doors that go out to a deck where I can look out onto a meadow that was once an old Wintu hunting ground. I'm also blessed with having the North light in this room!

What is your favorite piece in your new show?

Each piece is my favorite at the time of its concept on through to its completion. I agree that the monumental work of art completed can be a favorite so I suppose mine would be " The Lavender Set".

What do you consider the special qualities of this piece?

The emotions that come through.

Is there a theme or editorial direction for your current work?

I'm addicted to the soul of my themes, no matter what I chose. It can be a dancer, horses in flight or a mother and child scene. As long as it captures the emotion of my subjects. I also love paintings animals just as much as I love watching them. They are each unique and continue to amaze me always!

What medium are you working in currently and why have you chosen it?

I started out using oil paint when I was 16 years old and after many years of working in different mediums including printmaking, sculpture, watercolors, I've returned to my first love primarily using oil paints on my canvases. For me it tends to glide and reveal the subject that I want tp capture using fresh brush strokes for the grand final'ee.
